The most common issue people have with CBD and their pet is figuring out the proper dose. Many brands and people will tell you to dose based on weight. Mikko’s Choice is here to tell you that is simply not true.
Mikko’s Choice has a strong background in cannabis and CBD for people and started to help animals in 2015—long before any official pet products were on the market. Through experience helping people and animals, Mikko’s Choice has over the years figured out some general guidelines when it comes to dosing CBD for your pet. The most important thing to remember is—every individual is different. This is common knowledge in the human CBD and cannabis space. No one talks about dosing relative to weight in that industry. In fact, humans and animals both have an endocannabinoid system (ECS)–all vertebrates do. The discovery of this system goes back to 1990–see what Harvard Medical School has to say about it here. The ECS is what determines the dose that will work for you or your pet. It is sort of like alcohol. People of varying weights can tolerate different amounts, no matter their size. The same is true for our pets.
Just because a horse is large does not mean it needs double or triple the dose of CBD as a dog. Just because a 10 lb dog is smaller than a 100 lb dog does not mean it needs less. It is, unfortunately, a bit more complicated than that. The truth is, there is no clear CBD dose guide for animals. All you can do is start with a small amount and go up or down from there. Mikko’s Choice likes to recommend starting with 50-100 mg, which is about .50-1 ml or half of a dropper to a full dropper of the All Animals CBD Tincture. For the CBD Pellets start with 1-2 scoops. Stay at that dose for at least a week to see if it is helping, from there you can adjust the dose, or frequency of giving, up or down.
Keep in mind that situations may change your animal’s needs and thus their dose. If they are on an established maintenance dose, but are injured or stressed by an event then you may need to adjust. In situations like that, you can increase their dose as needed. It is ok to then go back to their maintenance dose once the injury or stress has resolved.
Many brands will offer formulations that are simply too low in milligrams (mg) of CBD. Many offer CBD tinctures with as little as 4 mg in an entire dropper. You can find more about comparing Mikko’s Choice formulations in this blog post: CBD Milligram Comparison. These low dose formulations and improper dosing guidelines can also be a reason why you might not be seeing the full benefit CBD has to offer your pet. Many people are scared, understandably, to give “too much” to their pet. Luckily, The World Health Organization has backed up the long believed claim that CBD “does not appear to have abuse potential or cause harm.” You can read more about their findings here.
So, go for it! Experiment with CBD for your pet to find their proper dose. As always, Mikko’s Choice is here for you if you have any questions. Please email: info@mikkoschoice.com
